Short and Reeves "The Graphic Novel"

A graphic novel is an illustrated work intended for a more mature audience. The story line follows a dramatic arc that has a definite beginning, middle, and end. This differs from comics that have infinitely ongoing plots. The graphic novel format can be integrated into both academic and business settings as a tool to enhance communication. Some believe that complex business ideas and strategies could be more effectively conveyed through a graphic novel because graphic novels increase interaction and optimize students’ efforts. Graphic novels can also help alleviate the business world’s bad image and make the field more desirable to students. This style of learning is favorable to generation Y. Gen Y is a digital media driven generation that would respond more to visual content than traditional textbooks. The graphic novel will keep students with a limited attention span interested in the content and make it easier for them to understand complex ideas. Traditional textbooks provide a linear way of learning information whereas a graphic novel creates a storyline, and visual elements can positively impact learning, which would help visual learners more than just reading text. Graphic novels could be a great resource for communication with students or colleagues.
